Mission Statement

Fierce Backbone is a collaborative organization committed to writing, developing and producing new dramatic works. We endeavor to provide opportunities where the skills and artistry of our membership can flourish.

{mos_fb_discuss:5}How do we work?

Our organization consists of three units (or discs on the backbone): writers, actors and directors. We designed the units to complement each other in the development of new works and productions. We also designed the units to focus on the needs of the individual artists. The units are self-governing in terms of rules and membership selection. But the units work together in the development process.

We have structured our development in five phases:

Cold Reading Workshop

Meets every other Monday night. Run by the writers. Three writers each bring in a short selection of work. The Acting Head receives the selections from the writers in advance of the workshop and assigns roles to the actors. Each reading is followed by a feedback session with the writer. See Calendar for details.

Scene Study Workshop

Meets every other Monday night. Run by the directors. Directors work closely with writers to troubleshoot sections of plays and get them up on their feet. Directors get the opportunity to try out their chops and receive feedback from fellow Directors. Actors get the opportunity to experiment and be a part of a developing show. Scene Study will launch in April. See Calendar for details to come.

Staged Readings

Once a new work has gone through the rigors of the Cold Reading and Scene Study Workshops, it may be ready to be a part of the Staged Reading Series. These are rehearsed readings in a theatrical venue in front of an invited audience.

Workshop Productions

Our artists are fully engaged throughout all phases of the development process.
